Coober Pedy
After our overnight stay in Pimba we headed north to Coober Pedy. We reached our destination in the afternoon. Not was we expected the look of CP but fascinating and very interesting. CP produces 80% of Australia’s opal trade.
We set camp and had a quick drive around town with the must do picture of CP town sign. We booked already a tour for the next day, so we went back and cooked dinner. Over night it was a bit windy π¬.
We took a lazy start into this morning with late breakfast and hanging around the van.
1 pm our tour started with Aaron, our tour guide, what a character. We had to change the tour schedule and drove to his home and Aaron showed us how people usually live inCP. Underground. He explained the whole building and living style.
Next stop was the Croatian church. Wow unexpected. Very nice, took them 1 year to built.
Next stop was the dog fence which runs over 3500 km through Oz to separate sheep from dingoes. On the road crossing they have sensor sirens to scare off the dogs.
Next was moon π land, nothing there. A lot of movies where shot here.
A long drive to the Breakaway hills. Stunning views, scenery and colours and some sparkling wine π₯π₯π₯π₯π₯.
Last stop was his own opal mine. Aaron explained the process of mining opal’s which was very impressive. They use special designed machines which sucks all the rocks up above ground or they use huge diggers to go horizontal in. Amazing stuff.
Drove back and had a lot talking points. Very special place. The beauty of this town is not on the surface, it’s hidden.
